So I had been hoping to update my blog at the start of September with news of smashing my steeplechase in Sweden and finishing my season on a high… only that didn’t happen… so I kept schtum.
Basically I got my travel there (Gothenburg via Manchester – Frankfurt) completely messed up and started the race just hours after almost 24 hours of travel – and completely bombed after the second lap, pulling out at about 2000m. Live and learn. Post return work went mental and I didn’t have the time to train let alone race so Mike and I decided to end my season and have a week of complete rest.
Last week I started back training properly, getting the mileage back up to 50mpw but just running easy most days with a half session with Zack in Croatia (2 x 4 x 1min hard / 1min tempo), and a Parkrun in Pontefract on Saturday (17.17).
This week I ‘enjoyed’ my first track session back, something I did genuinely enjoy as I felt good and our group has expanded nicely to a good mix of 3 girls and 4 boys. Even the monsoon conditions (I actually aquaplaned while running which was a new experience!) and lightning didn’t dampen the session – although I’m sure coach Mike didn’t relish timing up from the infield!
I am hoping over the winter months to improve my endurance – this will probably mean more miles. Previously more miles always meant foot and ankle issues due to ‘pounding the pavements’ but luckily this year I have found Hoka One One – who do maximal cushioned shoes that are still light and natural to run in. Since switching to running in these earlier in February (I wear the Cliftons and the Conquest styles as well as the Huaka for tempo running) I have managed to up my weekly mileage from 45mpw to over 55mpw with no problems.
and even better they are now available to try locally at new Otley running store Yorkshire Runner: http://www.yorkshirerunner.com/
